Memorial Day
“General Orders No.11” is the founding document of “Decoration Day”, the original name for the day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.
Before you fire up the barbeque or pack your picnic basket today, please take a moment to read the original document, written in 1868, that designated this day for “the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades” – originally, Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
